Bank Holiday Weekend

Thinking of getting away to the sunny seaside for Bank Holiday???? Well there’s no place sunnier than Torquay (not for the last 3 weeks anyway).

We still have some space left in the Backpackers so give me a call 01803 299924 ASAP. Torquay is looking beautiful just now. Spring flowers are out and sea is getting warmer (slowly) in time for the official swim season starting 1sr May. Don’t be shy (or a whimp) the water was crystal clear today, beckoning the brave.

There’s always plenty going on in the Bay on Bank Holidays and a superb atmosphere. Hope to see you very soon!

Working Holidays

Sooooo……. all you people who come to the UK on working holiday visas- Where are you? Don’t you know that living and working in London doesn’t count as experiencing the ‘working holiday’ thing in England, Britain, or even Europe! What you doing?- apart from breathing the fumes of a million cars  and searching high and low for a blade of grass?

Don’t get me wrong- I love London and if you want to be a tourist or go to tea with the Queen, then good on yer. But if you want to see Britain then the only real way is to GET OUT. You Aussies and South Africans are the worst culprits-  are you living in a share house full of people from your own country? Are you thinking- ‘ what am I doing here? I might as well go home where I can get job so much more easily and earn real money and where the sun shines more than a week at a time’?. (Not bad just now though- eh?)

If you are feeling that your working holiday is ‘missing something’ then why not go somewhere else in the UK? Somewhere where you will experience the country, meet locals, be ‘special’, walk into a job and SEE THE SEA!-OK jobs aren’t going to throw themselves at you and few are ‘well paid’, but apart from a (very reasonable ) £75/week, at Torquay Backpackers, then all you need is food and drink and you’ll find these alot cheaper than most places in the UK.

What more can I say? SEE YOU SOON, you so called ‘working holiday travellers’. Do abit of travel and holiday while you work cos Torquay is a holiday even when you are working!

A real ‘working holiday’ is when you wake up on a beach with a fuzzy head after a beach party and stumble straight to your  breakfast shift in the  hotel still stinking of woodsmoke and dreaming of swimming naked in the phosphoresence! If you can say you have experinced this on your ‘working holiday’   then stay where you are, (it’s almost certainly Torquay, anyway!). If  you haven’t then I’ll book you a bed!

Nights out on Torquay Harbourside

I ventured down the harbour last night. I was pleasantly surprised by the nice vibe down there. Traditionally, the weekends running up to Easter are quieter but there seemed to be plenty of people out having fun last night. Torquay harbour is definitely a great place for a Saturday night out, these days. Plenty of great pubs, there is something for everyone.

We started by sampling the music at Ryans bar in Abbey Road, you’re always guaranteed a good band on Saturday nigh- and most other nights, for that matter. Was a little metally for my taste but looked fun, if you like that sort of thing!

On to the  Cider press is always the favourite as one of the few places on the main drag with a traditional  pub atmosphere. The best night for the cider (and my favorite night of the week) is Tuesday Jam night.

From here we waived Green Ginger ( great if cheap drinks and plenty of company) and Mambo (the hotspot for late night shinanagens) mainly because they both had queues.

Dropped in on Rude, stayed upstairs where they now have live music, it has a classy feel in contast to the highly atmspheric and divey but fun downstairs club.

On to The Green Room. this place has certainly ‘taken off’. Has the feeling of a party pub with style on a Saturday.

Jacket potato from the best Potato chef in Devon…..I kid myself- the world! – Check out his facebook group if you doubt my word: Baked potato man of Torquay.

You see- this is just a small sample of what Torquay habourside has to offer! You’d better come and check it out!
